Wirt zu St. Peter – Residential and Multi-Purpose Building in Carinthia
The “Wirt zu St. Peter” project in Rangersdorf (Carinthia) is an architecturally and ecologically ambitious multi-purpose timber construction that combines gastronomy, housing, and regional timber architecture in a modern wood building. Supported by the Austrian Forest Fund and recognized as a “CO₂ Bonus Lighthouse Project,” the development sets new standards in multi-storey timber construction and demonstrates the potential of cross laminated timber (CLT) in contemporary architecture.
Collaboration in Architecture, Structural Engineering and Timber Expertise
The project was implemented in close cooperation with DI Reinhard Suntinger (architecture), FS1 Fiedler Stöffler Ziviltechniker GmbH (structural engineering), and master carpenter Hans Plößnig. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern CLT construction makes “Wirt zu St. Peter” a strong example of sustainable timber construction in alpine regions.
Contemporary Residential Construction with CLT
The new building comprises eight equally sized apartments with nearly identical layouts. Each unit includes an entrance area, a living kitchen, two rooms, and a bathroom/WC – functionally and efficiently designed. This CLT residential building illustrates how engineered wood buildings in the multi-family housing sector can be realized with high precision and energy efficiency.
Regional Value Creation and Material Expertise
The products used in the project were manufactured at the HASSLACHER group’s production sites in Stall (NORITEC Holzindustrie GmbH) and Rangersdorf (GEMSON GmbH) – a clear example of regional CLT manufacturing and reliable material quality. Both facilities are located less than 10 km from the construction site. The cross laminated timber elements were connected using X-fix C, an innovation developed in the Mölltal region. X-fix is a metal-free, high-performance, self-tensioning and form-fit connector for CLT – a well-engineered solution for precise and sustainable wood construction.
Use of Innovative Products by the HASSLACHER group
The project features a variety of engineered wood products from the HASSLACHER group, including the HASSLACHER Komfortdiele – a dimensionally stable, laminated larch terrace decking, multi-layer solid wood panels, glulam (BSH) made from local larch, and larch wood façades. These products combine the benefits of modern wood processing with the natural durability of one of Europe’s most resilient softwoods.
Larch is among the most durable and weather-resistant coniferous species in Europe, making it ideal for both load-bearing and non-load-bearing timber structures with high mechanical performance requirements.
A special innovation in this project is the double-shell wall construction with integrated insulation, executed as a CLT-Box (hollow box element).
The HASSLACHER group is pleased to have contributed its timber construction expertise to this regionally significant project, which was honored with the Carinthian Timber Construction Award 2025 – Special Prize.
