SSB Bus Operations Depot Stuttgart-Gaisburg - New construction of the storage facility

The new parking facility at the SSB bus operations depot in Stuttgart-Gaisburg provides space for roughly 120 to 140 buses and replaces the previous facility, which was destroyed by an electrical issue in October 2021.
For fire safety reasons, SSB deliberately opted against a large hall complex at the company’s largest bus depot and instead chose a modular design with twelve individual modules. The roof structure consists of a delicate, material-efficient construction made of curved glued laminated timber beams with steel tension rods, combined with PVC membrane surfaces. The side exterior walls of the modules are built as exposed brickwork using reclaimed bricks and, like the timber roofs, are greened. The column-free interior design allows for unobstructed entry and exit of the buses. The design is based on a concept by the renowned Stuttgart engineering firm schlaich bergermann partner.

A key advantage of the timber construction over a steel structure not only with its significantly better CO₂ footprint but also in its superior fire safety: in the event of a fire, the timber structure retains its load-bearing capacity for much longer. Wood is not electrically conductive, so short circuits cannot propagate. Additionally, the production and recycling of wood require significantly less energy than that of metal.

For the material-efficient roof structure, the HASSLACHER group supplied a total of 120 curved arch beams made from 388 m³ of glued laminated timber from its sites in Kleinheubach (HASSLACHER Holzbauteile GmbH & Co. KG) and Sachsenburg (NORITEC Holzindustrie GmbH), along with 364 m³ of glulam purlins. A central technical and logistical element was the precise cutting of the curved beams. Due to the high demands on dimensional accuracy and fit for on-site assembly, very careful preparation was required.

The on-site assembly of the components was carried out by Müllerblaustein, who appreciated the highly developed and efficient collaboration in terms of accurate execution and smooth logistics.
