A Flagship Project for Sustainable Timber Construction in Denmark
With the new administrative building WoodHub in Odense, Denmark’s largest timber structure to date has been completed – a groundbreaking project showcasing sustainable urban construction. Designed by the renowned architectural firm C.F. Møller Architects and executed by NCC Danmark A/S, the new development sends a strong message for the ecological transformation of the construction industry.
Solid Timber as the Core Element
The solid timber construction of this office complex sets new benchmarks for sustainable building projects in Denmark. Over 1,450 m³ of glulam (glued laminated timber) were used solely for the columns. An additional 5,000 m³ of cross-laminated timber (CLT) were utilized for the ceiling and wall elements. Coordinating the delivery of timber components posed a unique challenge: based on a “just-in-time” delivery principle, logistics had to be synchronized across three production sites of the HASSLACHER Group.
Glulam and CLT made from spruce wood were supplied from HASSLACHER Group’s production facilities in Hermagor (HASSLACHER Holzbausysteme GmbH), Stall (NORITEC Stall), and Magdeburg (Nordlam GmbH). HESS Timber was responsible for planning, manufacturing, component delivery, and project management.
Architecture That Sets Standards
Spanning an area of 31,000 m², WoodHub will accommodate approximately 1,600 government employees. The building complex, featuring publicly accessible courtyards, blends seamlessly into the urban fabric of Odense. Its design rises to six stories in the center and gradually tapers down to three stories to match the surrounding structures. The facades made of recycled aluminum in reddish-brown hues echo the traditional brick architecture of the region.
A Project with Far-Reaching Impact
With WoodHub, the Danish Building and Property Agency has realized a visionary pilot project that highlights the potential of timber construction – from ecological, architectural, and functional perspectives. For the HASSLACHER Group, WoodHub is a compelling example of how sustainable timber solutions can be efficiently and aesthetically integrated into large-scale projects.
