In Kirchberg am Wagram, a building which includes two different uses, a new gymnasium and music association, was recently built. Adjacent to the new secondary school, a charming wooden building was erected on the site of the former gym, which now houses the new gym and the music association, including a music hall, rehearsal and recreation rooms. In addition, a recreation room was also created for the school's day care. Laurenz Vogel Architekten planned the building to be able to use the space for multiple purposes and it can be adapted to changing requirements and future needs.
This project was the winner in the Public and Municipal Buildings category of the Lower Austria 2023 Timber Construction Award. It also won the Styrian Timber Construction Award 2023 for the category Buildings outside Styria.

Due to the permitted building height and size, the gymnasium is built into the ground but nonetheless it is still bright and inviting. This is ensured by visible wooden surfaces, a light band along the entire length of the gym and the coffered ceiling. On the ground floor, there is the large music hall, which is also spanned by a coffered ceiling - with integrated acoustic panels. Below the gallery, behind an acoustically effective partition wall, is also a large storage room. The lamella structure of the façade is continued inside, with an acoustic fleece behind it. From the outside, the wooden slats arranged in different densities indicate the respective functions in the interior. On the upper floor, the music association's rehearsal and recreation rooms are located around a central atrium.

The main design element is wood, with Fir and Ash as the primary species. The HASSLACHER Group supplied around 90 m³ of glulam in visible quality and around 120 m³ of cross laminated timber, equipped with 570 m² of excellent surface - both in the Fir species. With the HASSLACHER Excellent Lamella, new standards can be set in terms of crack and joint formation. This is made possible by the blocked structure. The three-layered Excellent Lamella can be calculated in the same way as a conventional solid wood lamella in the course of static dimensioning.
