      Canopy at Chifley

Moorabbin Airport (YMMB) is a key hub for general aviation in the southeast of Melbourne, Victoria, and one of Australia’s busiest airports in terms of aircraft movements. It also serves as Australia’s leading flight training centre and hosts over 50 aviation businesses. In addition to its aviation role, it features a business precinct with retail and dining options, as well as the Chifley Business Park, making it a significant local employer.

For the construction of a four-tenancy commercial complex at Moorabbin Airport, the Australian Goodman Group relied on the renewable building material, wood. The 15,600 m² facility combines functional warehouse spaces at the rear with representative showrooms and office units at the front – a concept that convinces both aesthetically and functionally.

Approximately 1,500 m³ of glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) were used, specially manufactured for this project at the HASSLACHER group’s sites in Sachsenburg and Stall (both NORITEC Holzindustrie GmbH), Hermagor (HASSLACHER Holzbausysteme GmbH), and Kleinheubach (HASSLACHER Holzbauteile GmbH & Co. KG). The load-bearing glulam elements enable large cross-sections and spans and offer a lifespan comparable to conventional building materials – with a significantly lower CO₂ footprint. The modular timber construction also supports the circular economy, a key concern of the Goodman Group.

The sustainable overall concept is complemented by a 400-kW photovoltaic system on the roof, eight charging stations for electric vehicles, and an intelligent energy management system with smart metering.
