      Energinet Headquarters – Hybrid Timber Office Building with Glulam Structure

      Administrative Building in Denmark with Energy-Efficient Hybrid Timber Construction

      In Fredericia, Denmark, a new headquarters is being developed for the public energy company Energinet. The multi-storey office and administrative building extends the existing site by approximately 27,000 m², providing space for around 900 workplaces, a central canteen and modern conference facilities. The project targets DGNB Gold certification and focuses on delivering an energy-efficient building with high standards for indoor climate and user comfort.

      The structure is designed as a hybrid timber building, combining the structural strengths of timber, steel and concrete. Each material is used where it performs best, resulting in an efficient and well-balanced construction concept.

      Glulam Structural System in Engineered Timber Construction – Contribution of the HASSLACHER group

      For the hybrid timber office building, the HASSLACHER group, through its subsidiary HESS TIMBER (Kleinheubach, Germany), delivered a comprehensive scope of services covering planning, production, prefabrication and quality control.

      The CAD-based detailing of the timber structure included the definition of all connection zones as well as the coordination of interfaces with steel beams and precast concrete floor slabs. The objective was to realise a technically precise, installation-optimised glulam structural system suitable for the demanding commercial application.

      At the Kleinheubach site (HASSLACHER Holzbauteile GmbH & Co. KG), approximately 340 m³ of glulam has been manufactured. Around 270 m³ has been used for nearly 500 individual glulam columns, each with varying heights and different connection configurations. Steel components and connectors were integrated, pre-assembled and inspected in the factory, allowing installation-ready elements to be delivered to site.

      A key technical feature of the project is the set of glulam atrium beams, with depths of around 1.5 m and spans exceeding 20 m, demonstrating the capabilities of modern engineered timber construction.

      Prefabrication and Site Logistics in Hybrid Timber Construction

      The high degree of prefabrication of the glulam structural system provided significant advantages for the general contractor NCC during construction. Precise factory production, clear component marking and delivery sequencing aligned with installation phases enabled fast, predictable and efficient on-site assembly.

      The project illustrates how glulam can be successfully applied in multi-storey office and administrative buildings to accommodate large spans, complex geometries and high technical requirements within an economical hybrid timber construction approach.
