Urban Timber Architecture in Southern Dallas

Halperin Park in Dallas, Texas, is a transformative urban development built near the Interstate 35E freeway. Designed to reconnect, the five-acre cap park offers a walkable green space with playgrounds, gardens, water features, and a central amphitheater. It is set to become the heartbeat of Southern Dallas – a central gathering place where everyone is welcome.

Freeform Glulam Bandshell – Engineered Timber and Steel Design

At the heart of the park stands a freeform sculptural glulam bandshell canopy, developed and engineered from glued laminated timber (glulam) and steel. The freeform structure spans approximately 17 m (56 ft) and reaches heights of up to 9 m (30 ft). 3D curved glulam beams are supported by concrete pedestals and grade beams, while steel purlins tie the arches together and support the metal cladding. Moment connections and minimal cross‑bracing ensure structural stability and require precision installation.

Hybrid Timber-Steel Structure with Advanced Engineering

The integration of 3D curved glulam and adjustable steel components enables complex geometries and efficient construction in this application. The canopy provides shade and acoustic enhancement for performances and reflects the creative potential of engineered timber in civic architecture.
