Cambridge South Station represents a pioneering approach to modern railway station construction, with a clear focus on sustainability and accessibility. The striking feature is the extensive use of glued laminated timber and cross-laminated timber (CLT) in both the station building and platform canopies. To ensure durability in an exposed environment, these timber structures were manufactured from European larch at HASSLACHER group’s sites in Kleinheubach (HASSLACHER Holzbauteile GmbH & Co. KG) and Stall (NORITEC Holzindustrie GmbH). This wood species was chosen for its relatively high natural resistance to weathering. For the CLT elements, the "excellent" surface in larch was used, offering a superior appearance due to its special construction.
The station serves as a key transport hub for the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. With its generous capacity and state-of-the-art infrastructure, it is designed to accommodate high passenger volumes and was intentionally planned as a car-free zone. Particularly noteworthy is the planned station roof, which may become the largest of its kind in the UK. Its green covering with native wildflowers contributes positively to local biodiversity and climate, while counteracting increasing soil sealing.
The installation was challenging. Due to the proximity to active, electrified railway lines, several weekends were required, during which tracks were closed and power was shut off. During these periods, assembly teams worked around the clock in shifts to complete the construction efficiently.
