Residential Building in Modular Timber Construction

The HASSLACHER group demonstrates how future-oriented residential timber construction can function through modular, serial production: tailor-made, precisely manufactured, and sustainably planned. This modular single-family timber home with 143 m² of living space was produced in four large-volume modules at the Hermagor site (HASSLACHER Holzbausysteme GmbH) – a strong example of modern mass timber residential construction.
The project incorporates around 15 m³ of glulam, approximately 34 m³ of cross-laminated timber from the Sachsenburg and Stall sites (NORITEC Holzindustrie GmbH), as well as roughly 18.5 m³ of structural finger jointed solid timber manufactured at the Preding site.

Serially Manufactured Modular Timber Units with Individual Adaptability

The prefabricated wood modules – 3.50 m wide, 4 m high, and more than 15 m long – were transported to the site via special transport. Once installed, the modular timber home integrates flexibly into its surroundings. Identical room structures and pre-planned connection points allow for various living scenarios, from family-oriented layouts to partial rental concepts.

Integrated Quality from a Single Source in Modern Timber Construction

All work stages originate from a single source – from planning and industrial prefabrication to on-site assembly. This offsite manufactured timber housing approach ensures consistently high execution quality, significantly reduces construction time, and provides long-term durability. The robust structural system is based on circular timber construction principles, reducing embodied CO₂ by up to 90%.

Digital Prefabrication and 3D Elements in Modular Timber Construction

The modules were produced with integrated 3D elements that ensure high precision and extremely fast installation on site. This digital planning workflow is a key component of the modern timber expertise of the HASSLACHER group and highlights the accuracy achieved in serial modular timber housing.

Award-Winning Sustainable Residential Timber Design – German Design Award 2025

This modular timber housing project received the German Design Award 2025. The jury recognized it as a “radically compact and flexible single-family home” that convinces in ecological, social, and aesthetic terms. It follows the principle of “form follows function”energy-efficient, cost-effective, future-ready, and aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for low-carbon, sustainable residential timber construction.
